Practical Life

Practical Life in Montessori helps children learn to care for themselves, the environment and each other.

In the Primary years (3-6), children learn how to do activities that include pouring, scooping, using various kitchen utensils, washing dishes, polishing objects, scrubbing tables, and cleaning up.

In Practical Life, children also learn how to

dress themselves,
tie their shoes,
wash their hands, and
other various self-care needs.
Children develop these skills through a range of Montessori materials and activities to grow a child's concentration and prepare them for writing. For the first three years of life, children see a sense of order in their environment.

From 3 to 6 years, Montessori children are developing how to build their own order and discover, understand, and refine the order they have become accustomed to.

Practical life in the subsequent years at Montessori includes many of the same skills and begins to take a bigger drive towards community service oriented activities.
