Sensorial

Learning first comes to us through the senses and focussing on what is being taught allows the child to more easily concentrate on it. Colours are taught with the Montessori colour tablets. These colour tablets are all exactly the same except for one thing - their colour in the centre. This removes confusion for the child and assists them to focus on specifically the colour.

It is important to have exact phrasing of terms. For example, an oval is not an "egg shape" and a sphere is not a "ball". As such, the Montessori method puts emphasis on the correct use of terminology – as can be seen apparent in the Montessori Sensorial area.

The Montessori Sensorial curriculum also covers some areas of mathematics. For example, the red rods in the sensorial area are a direct link to the segmented rods in math that teach 1-10. Another example is that the pink tower has a connection to units and thousands that are learnt later in the 3-6 stages. Even the trinomial cube is used in the later years to teach complex mathematical formulas.
